What Factors Affect the Cost of Your Garage Door?

    • Material Influence: Steel garage doors are cost-effective and durable, while wooden doors are pricier but enhance curb appeal and value.
    • Size and Colour: Costs vary with size (double doors cost more) and custom colours.
    • Automation and Insulation: Automated and insulated doors offer long-term savings but have higher initial costs.
    • Style Variations: Prices differ across styles, with up and over being economical, and sectional, roller, and side-hinged varying based on features and materials.

In these times of economic uncertainty, you may not see a new garage door as a necessity. However, it’s vital that your home is equipped with a high-quality garage door, as a poorly fitted and insecure one could actually end up costing you more money in the long run.

A new garage door can be a big investment, so it’s important that you understand the different factors that can affect the price before you begin shopping – that way you can prioritise what’s important. But what factors influence garage door cost? The team here at JB Garage Doors is here to explain.

    Material

Garage doors are typically constructed from two different materials: wood and steel. Steel garage doors are lightweight, durable and much cheaper to manufacture and install, making them the perfect option for anyone on a tighter budget. Meanwhile, wooden garage doors are usually custom made and require a high level of craftsmanship; therefore, they are more expensive as a result, especially when you consider the long-term cost of re-staining them every couple of years. However, it’s also important to take into account the instant boost in kerb appeal that a wooden garage door offers your home; it may even increase property value, meaning that you could potentially recoup the cost of your investment when the time comes to sell your home.

    Colour

Most garage doors are usually only available in a few standard RAL colours. If you’re after something a bit more unique or you want a specific colour to match the rest of your exterior, you might have to pay that little bit extra.

    Size

It may seem obvious, but the size of your garage door will have a huge impact on the cost. As you’d expect, double garage doors will be more expensive than single ones due to the extra material required. Similarly, if you have an unusually shaped aperture, such as an arched or non-standard size garage opening,  this will typically cost more as the unique dimensions mean the door will need to be entirely custom made.

    Automation

Automation is a fabulous feature for any garage door to have; it’s convenient, easy to operate and perfect for those cold winter days when you don’t want to get out of your vehicle to open the garage door manually. However, these benefits are reflected in the price tag and an automated garage door will be more expensive than its manual counterpart. If you’re interested in the convenience that automation offers but you’re not quite ready to invest in a new garage door, most existing garage doors can have automation added later.

    Insulation

An insulated garage door usually consists of double-skinned panels that are filled with an insulating material. Whilst typically on the more expensive side, they offer a number of long-term benefits that can save you money in the future. As your garage door is a weak spot in the thermal envelope of your home, an insulated garage door can improve energy efficiency and reduce energy bills, whilst also ensuring your garage can be used year-round.

    Style

There are four main common garage door styles that come in varying prices, depending on the materials used:

    • Up and over: Up and over garage doors have been the go-to option for many years due to their simple, no-nonsense design. This simplicity translates into a lower price and they are typically the cheapest garage door style available.
    • Roller: Roller garage doors can vary in price hugely depending on a number of factors. A no-frills roller door will usually be in the same price region as an up and over door; however, many roller garage doors nowadays contain insulation, automation and other features that will likely increase the price point.
    • Sectional: Sectional garage doors comprise multiple horizontal panels that lift vertically onto a ceiling track. Due to their complex design and the fact that they normally come with automation as standard, they are one of the pricier garage door styles on the market.
    • Side-hinged: Side-hinged garage doors are perfect for period properties or garages that require frequent pedestrian access. The price of a side-hinged door is largely dependent on the material it is constructed from. For example, steel side-hinged doors will likely cost less than timber.
